The Details:

The EJ-series turbo runs hot, and in stock form the heat shield is shaped around the OEM downpipe. Once you go aftermarket, that clearance disappears and most people ditch the shield entirely, leaving the turbo's exhaust housing radiating heat directly toward the intercooler.
