This tool may seem expensive initially and, yes, you can use an "appropriately" sized socket and mallet. And thats what I've always done in the past, but I decided to buy this tool. And I am completely satisfied. It fit accurately over the camshafts and I was able to drive them all into place within 5 minutes. Perfectly and correctly installed in minutes. By the time you have just one single seal not fully seat or damaged and leak causing a complete timing teardown you'll have wished you'd used a tool like this the first time.
